FQ10 01/05/2011

So my internship is officially over, actually it was over the week before Christmas.  But something awesome happened!  My mentor, Brett organized a 7 week long lacrosse camp with Scripps Ranch High School and asked for my help in those.  It's pretty cool.  We work with the boys and the girls 2 days a week in the gym and 1 day a week out on the field doing conditioning.  Yesterday was the first day working with them.  We did all their pre-camp testing: weigh-in, 20-yd sprint, pushup max, plank max.  The best part about working with this group is that I'm no longer referred to as an intern, I am referred to as Coach Bailee.  Love it!

Well, that's it for now.

FQ 10 Week? 12/04/2010

Wow, it's been a long time.  I don't know what week I'm in of my internship, don't know how many days I've been there.  All I know is I've been putting in the hours, learning a lot, having a blast.

I've been doing a lot of work with Brett and the baseball guys.  I try to hop in on those sessions as often as possible.  I was able to work on a session with 3 pitchers which was great to see the different  program designed specifically for pitchers.

I spent two days last week working on my report for the internship class, it turned out great and looked very professional.  I'm happy to report that I received 100% on the project!

So I think I have officially only 1 week of my internship left which is so sad!  But I have pneumonia, so I'm thinking some time off is necessary and I can go back.  Also, I'm hoping I can spend some more time at FQ and continue learning.

I am happy to report, that I will be the Strength and Conditioning Coach for Carlsbad High School Varsity Softball!  I can't wait to really get my hands wet with this new challenge!

What do you know, I'm behind on my blogs again.  Sorry for not updating sooner, but it's been a crazy week!  So since it has been a long week and I didn't get to do my daily updates I'll talk about a couple highlights from the whole week.

Anyway, so I was at Fitness Quest Monday and Wednesday this week and I do have some exciting things to report.  I got an email Sunday night from Brett who is the Director of Athletics at FQ and who runs an off season baseball training program.  There is a wide range of MLB guys as well as AA, college and high school guys. So Brett was asking me and one of the other interns if we'd help out.  Basically we'd be helping with setup, some assistance, stretching, clean up, and making shakes for them after.  But I was so stoked to get to work with Brett and the athletes.  It's great to see the process of taking them through the whole off-season training program.  The guys come in very out of shape because most of them have been done with their season for a month or so and are de-conditioned.  So they come to us and we start out doing mostly cardiovascular training and working on shoulder stability and thoracic spine mobility and progressively work up.  I love working with the guys and it's fun seeing the same clients a few times a week because now I'm feeling less like an intern.  I'm starting to know the clients and they're starting to know me and it's a much more comfortable working environment.

I went to Boot Camp on Saturday morning.  It was much nicer this week since it wasn't raining.  It was a pretty big group because the ACE Symposium was happening at the Hilton where we start from and so we had some other people from all over that joined.     The best part was that we played Boot Camp Football early rather than at the end.  My team won again, which was awesome, but I didn't get as much action as last week.

And lastly, during our weekly training session on Saturday, we learned about Joint Integrity, which has a lot to do with balance and the movement and strength of our joints.  It was a pretty interesting learning session and it was nice to see the trainers' sessions broken down like this to better understand what's going on.

Hopefully this week I'll have more time to do my daily blogs.  Thanks for reading!

FQ10 Day 8 & 9 10/31/2010

I have a lot of catching up to do with my blogs.  I missed writing Friday and Saturday.

So Friday was Halloween at Fitness Quest.  All of the staff dressed up and best costume won a bunch of way cool stuff.  The costumes were fabulous.  It was fun to be apart of it and to dress up with people who really had fun with it.  Here's what everyone was:

Meg: lady bug
Chris: Cat
Brett: Pimp
Kyle: Dog the Bounty Hunter
Kareem: President Obama
Stephanie: Secretary
Chelsea: Surfer
Janet: Miss Fitness Quest
Ryan B and James: Dr. Evil and Mini Me
Doug: a stability ball
Craig: a pirate
Matt: not really sure.  He looked like a chic as a powderpuff coach
Me: Little Red Riding Hood

So with all these costumes it was pretty tough for everyone to focus.  Most of the morning was spent laughing.  The clients loved the costumes and it was a really fun day.  So although we were dressed up, it was business as usual.  Lots of training happening.  I was scheduled to shadow Brett.

Our first 2 groups were small groups.  They were 2 completely different age groups and types of women but Brett used the same workout for both.  It was interesting to see the differences in the types of women and the differences in effort.

Then we worked with Mike Jacobs, a baseball player, played for the Mets last year.  Friday was his 2nd session of the season with Brett and he said he was having a hard time.  It was a pretty tough workout for him.  He worked on shoulder and thoracic mobility as well as lower body strength.

So Saturday was a fairly easy day.  I went to Todd's Boot Camp that he teaches down at Mission Bay on Saturday mornings.  It was pouring rain which I was nervous about at first, but it ended up making it super fun.  I figured the people who are really dedicated will be out in the rain ready to workout at 8 am on a Saturday.    So we did our Boot Camp, I got picked on quite a bit by Todd but it was still pretty fun.  I met some cool people and it was awesome to get to workout with the clients.  The best part of Boot Camp is football afterward.  We all get together on a big grassy spot and play football with a tennis ball.  It was such a blast I really wanna start using it with the girls when we have free time at the end of the day.

After Boot Camp I went hope to get some dry clothes and try to get warm, then I had our usual Saturday training with the other 2 interns and Ryan.  We learned all the components to the dynamic warm up.

I got there a little early to use a foam roller on my hips because they were cramping during Boot Camp.  So as I was there rolling it out, one of the clients I've worked with, Tyler came in to work out.  He gave me a tip on rolling out the hips with a softball and we chatted a little.  It was really cool to get to see Tyler in a different situation when we can chat.  We now have a secret hiding spot for a softball I donated for our use.

So, tomorrow I'll be back at FQ for a nice long 9 hour shift.  I'm sure I'll learn a ton, can't wait!

Here's the video I promised.  Todd talks about change while I row in the background....enjoy!

FQ10 Day 7 10/27/2010

Today's blog will be short because I should be studying for the midterm I have tomorrow in my International Entrepreneurship class.

Another great day at Fitness Quest 10 has passed.  I spent my first hour with Meg who I haven't gotten to shadow yet, so that was great.  Meg is quite the inspiration.  She began training 6 years ago and 2 years ago (at the age of 50) began competing in fitness competitions.  To me, this is awesome.  I spent the rest of today with Ryan Burgess who works a lot with athletes but also works with the general public wanting to be in shape.

My hour with Meg was with a client who has very tight hamstrings so he spent a lot of time working on opening up the hips and lengthening his hamstrings.

So with Ryan, we worked with a couple athletes and a housewife looking to stay in shape, and a man working on hip mobility before a hip resurfacing surgery.

The athletes were both football players.  One was at the junior college level and the other was elite, the difference in athleticism was amazing.  It was great to be able to compare back to back.

The woman surprised me with her athleticism although not an athlete.  She had better mobility and better form that a lot of the athletes I've seen.

Oh, and I'm famous!  At least for 20 seconds or so.  Todd asked me to row on the rower in the background of a video he was filming.  I think I got the acting roll cuz I was all decked out in Under Armour.   But supposedly there's about 20 seconds where the camera is on me rowing away.  I haven't seen it yet, but when it's finished I'll see if I can post it on here.

Ok, back to studying.  Tomorrow is an off day at the gym, so Friday I'll have more to write.

FQ10 Day 6 10/26/2010

Today was awesome!  I got to work with Brett, which is awesome because he works with a lot of athletes.  I felt so comfortable working with him and wish I could work with him a ton.  I could learn so much from him and I'd love to sit and pick his brain for hours.

So we worked with 2 baseball players, a golfer, a basketball coach, and 2 guys who just wanna get size.

Brett explained to me that right now, the baseball players are just getting started in their strength training.  They are breaking down movements and lifting to the basics to ensure proper form and building up general fitness.  Baseball players at this time in the year tend to be extremely out of shape because they haven't had any training in a month or so.  So Brett works on getting their general fitness, mobility and flexibility to par before bringing in weights.  Brett really worked on the shoulders and thoracic which are key in baseball players.

With the golfer, we did a lot of the same strength exercises as with the baseball guys.  A lot of opening up the thoracic and shoulders and working on thoracic and shoulder mobility.

With the basketball coach, Brett did a lot of work that might mimic moves a basketball player would do.  A bunch of quick feet moves, core strength, and passing moves.  This client was a lot of fun.  He coaches high school basketball and it was awesome to listen to some of the advice he and Brett were giving about coaching high school athletes.  I learned a lot from this and I'd love to learn more and take it with me to Carlsbad High School.

The guys that were working on size and brut strength were fun.  They worked hard in the warm up and then did 2 different super sets of 5 sets each.  The first was squats and pushups with chains on their backs.  The second was dumbbell rows with hip/leg extensions.  At the end I got to practice my newly learned stretching techniques on one of the guys which was awesome!  Stoked to be able to get some hands on action.

And for the last hour I got to help out with TD Fitness, the nightly group fitness class.  I really enjoy helping the group fitness classes, helping people keep good form and motivating them to push and keep moving.

Today was awesome, love love love working with Brett, can't wait till tomorrow!

FQ10 Day 5 10/25/2010

Today is Monday.  Definitely feeling the Monday blues today.

Anyway, internship time.  I was at the gym at 6am, there was boot camp going on inside because it was raining so there was a lot going on.  So I helped out with boot camp until it was over at 630 and then started shadowing trainers at 7.

First I shadowed Anna, she was working with 2 women.  One was starting her training for an Ironman.  They were working on shoulders and legs, core, and biceps and triceps.  Anna gave me a good tip.  That the hardest part about writing a plan is piecing it together so it flows nicely and uses muscle groups effectively.  So I decided I'm going to start focusing on how the trainers have put programs together for specific clients and why they've done certain things.  Time to really start taking notes and get this figured out.

For the next 2 hours I shadowed Chelsea which was nice because I haven't worked with her yet.  Our first client is probably about the same age as me and Chelsea and she's a drummer.  She's quite feisty, likes to roll her eyes and talk back, but it's just her personality and Chelsea works with it.  So with this client we worked on opening up the chest muscles and strengthening her shoulder and back muscles.  The next hour we did all the same exercises but because she sits at a desk and needs to have her chest frame opened.

For my last hour I worked with Janet.  I love Janet's style of training.  I think I would be a lot like her.  Chelsea refers to her as the "bone crusher" cuz she works her clients hard.  Today we worked with one of the same clients we worked with last Monday.  The one with her leg in a cast.  That woman works her butt off and is a prime example of not being able to make excuses to not workout.  There are no excuses.  And we had our "Monday Confessions with Janet" talk.  She confessed she had quite a bit of alcohol and a hot dog at the Charger game.  I love it!

So, that's that for Monday.  More to come tomorrow!

FQ10 Day 4 10/24/2010

I'm writing this Sunday morning because things came up and I didn't have time last night.  So here we go, homemade latte in hand!

Yesterday was a great day at FQ10, but did you really expect me to say anything else?  I can't seem to leave at my scheduled time, I just love being there.

I got there at 8 and stepped in with Jeff.  He had a very interesting and challenging couple he was training.  Both are dealing with injuries and both have bad balance and aren't very strong, so Jeff has been working with the husband's balance and with the wife to do a real pushup.

That was it for working with Jeff, so I helped the front desk staff for a minute then headed up to the IMPACT zone and worked with Ryan Rogers who conveniently is also my boss.  His first group was 2 women who play tennis and were both rehabing from tennis injuries.  The next client was a man getting ready for his annual family Thanksgiving football game.  He was working on his quickness and strength so he can play without getting hurt.  We were teasing him that he's going to be the secret weapon for his team.

Then us interns had a little class.  We learned about assisted stretching on a table.  I already knew some of the stretches from massage school and the Active Isolated Stretching course I took, but it was great to get a refresher and get my hands dirty.  Ryan was quizing us on our anatomy while we learned the stretches, I had some issues remembering muscle names which was frustrating because I had every bone and muscle in the body down pat when I was in massage school.  Guess it's time to crack the books and refresh the brain!

So after our class, James and I headed down to the main gym for our own workout.  I hadn't worked out in a week and was itching to work out.  Well, James kicked my butt!  It was so fun working out in a way very different than I ever have.  He basically had me do a workout he has football players do.  I guess he didn't realize I am an out of shape girl.  But it was really fun to do new things and to have a person there pushing me and encouraging me.  The workout was intense and there were times I thought I was going to puke, but luckily rest came at the right times and I was able to recover.

After our killer workout I got to practice my newly learned stretching techniques on James and then he worked on me.  I'll tell you, there is nothing better than a good stretch session after a hard workout.  It really helps you wind down and relax your muscles as well as your nervous system.  Not only is it a key element in helping rebuild muscle tissue after tearing it down at the gym, it's good mentally.

So I ended up spending 8 hours at the gym.  It is a great feeling not wanting to leave work.  Guess it's time to write my weekly homework assignment.

"Don't be pushed my your fears.  Be led by your dreams"

Alright, another fabulous day spent at FQ10!  But I'm sure you all saw that one comin :)

I am so inspired being there.  The gym has such an amazing energy, the people have amazing energy, it's hard to explain but I love it.  I wanna get there early and stay late.  It's a great feeling.

So now on to my day.  So, I was scheduled 930-230 but my trainer had a meeting and her first client was scheduled at 10.  So I hung out with the front desk girl Wendy and at 10 headed up to the Impact studio to meet with Anna and watch her work.  Her clients were an older married couple.  They were a really fun couple that seemed to really enjoy each other which is always nice to see after 41 years of marriage!  They have been members of FQ10 from the beginning.

Next I shadowed Matt who was filling in for another trainer.  The client was an older man with a torn rotator cuff, so they were working on getting his range of motion and strength back.

I then went to Doug who had 30 minutes left with his clients.  Two middle aged men who he trains 3 days a week.  When I got with them, they were having to flip a tractor tire for 30 yards, not an easy feat!  Doug has a philosophy of not doing crunches with clients, especially clients who spend all day at a desk.  I really like that idea

Next I had some down time so I folded towels, cleaned up the gym, and worked with James on stretching.  Actually, he worked on me.  I think he spent about 30 minutes doing a bunch of stretching on me, showing me kinda how to do it.  I will be learning these stretches tomorrow, but I know most of them anyway, from massage school and the Active Isolated Stretching course I took for CEUs.  It felt amazing getting stretched for that long.  I think I would pay someone to just stretch me everyday for 30 minutes.  It just makes the body feel so good and helps relax the mind.  James and I also did some talking about continuing our education and the different certifications that are good to have.  He really helped me think about what I want.

After my awesome stretch sesh I helped Jeff and James coach Scripps Ranch High's basketball team.  They do an hour long camp 3 times a week.  It was awesome to get in on a group the same age as my high school girls and see what sorts of things I can do with them.  And it makes me want to do some more team building type things with my girls.

I really enjoy getting some one on one time talking with the trainers and seeing what they're all about.  I like to see a little more of what they're like when they're not around clients.  Although FQ10 is a super friendly and laid back place, the trainers are professional and so it's nice to get a little glimpse of who they are.

So tomorrow is some shadowing and then an hour long class, learning table stretching, can't wait!
